The application of fumed silica in the cosmetics industry

Fumed silica is an extremely fine nano-level amorphous silica with small particle size, uniform particle size distribution, large specific surface area, and high surface activity;

When fumed silica is added to the liquid system, hydrogen bonds are formed between the silanol groups on the adjacent particles and further develop into a three-dimensional network structure to limit the mobility of the liquid particles, thereby increasing the viscosity and stability of the liquid.

On the contrary, when a certain shear force is applied to the above-mentioned stable system, the hydrogen bonds that have formed the network structure are destroyed again, the mobility of the liquid particles increases, and the viscosity of the system decreases.

In addition, fumed silica is non-toxic, odorless, non-polluting, self-white, strong in reflecting ultraviolet, good stability, and does not decompose or change color after external irradiation, so it is widely used in the cosmetics industry.

1. Fumed silica and nail polish  

In nail polish, AEROSIL fumed silica can ensure uniform distribution of pigments in the brightener, prevent pigment precipitation, and provide the rheology of the final product, thereby improving coating properties. If the refractive index of the solvent system used is the same as that of AEROSIL fumed silica (1.48), a transparent nail polish formulation can be formed, such as base color and face color. Otherwise, when the concentration is higher, it has a matting effect, but reduces the desired gloss. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic AEROSIL fumed silica products can be used in nail polish. The recommended concentration of AEROSIL is between 0.25-4.0%. 

2. Fumed silica and lipstick  

In the lipstick, AEROSIL fumed silica can make the pigment distribution uniform, and can greatly improve the temperature resistance, and prevent the lipstick from softening when the temperature rises. After being applied to the lips, AEROSIL can prevent the lipstick from transferring to the fine lip lines. Bleeding occurs during the lipstick, making the lipstick long lasting. When the concentration is higher, the gloss will decrease.  According to the required product characteristics, AEROSIL 200 or AEROSIL R972 can be selected, and the concentration is 0.25-4%. In some special formulations, such as foundation or lip balm, up to 10% AEROSIL R972 can be used. 

3, fumed silica and eye care  

Many eye and facial makeup products, including powder, foundation, rouge, mascara, eyeliner, etc., only use AEROISL fumed silica to obtain the required characteristics and the necessary stability. AEROSIL fumed silica is a highly effective anti-caking agent and free-flowing agent, which can improve storage stability and dispersibility of powdered products. AEROSIL also enables the use of pigments in cosmetics, especially in the case of high solids content.

Finally, AEROSIL can be used as an efficient processing aid for grinding and filtering powders.
